Welcome To My Slow Living Kitchen

Welcome to my intentionally ordinary slow living kitchen.

One of the things I decided to embrace when I started rewilding myself was something I call Ordinary Joy. It’s basically the marriage of slow living & self love, which are my two favorite things to talk about! (Also homeschooling, but that falls under slow living in my brain)

I needed to declutter the cultural belief that my messy, “regular” (read: not trendy looking) kitchen wasn’t as good as the ones I was seeing on Instagram & Pinterest. But aesthetic is man-made and changes from year to year. So why not live joyfully in the kitchen I have & share that joy with others? Paying forward self acceptance and my obstinate refusal to dim my un-aesthetic light will only serve others who desperately want to break out of that same cultural trap but need to see someone go first.

Slow Living Kitchen Tip No. 1

Keep a mirepoix mix in your freezer so you can have a base for nourishing soups & stews any time! You never know when you’ll need to whip up a batch of homemade rib-sticking chicken & dumplings soup.

A mirepoix is a blend of onions, celery, & carrots that you cook with butter as a base for lots of recipes, especially in French cooking. If you buy veggies in bulk while they’re in season, you can chop them all in one go and store them in your freezer to use in recipes all year! If you can manage it, you’ll be saving both time & money in the long run.

You can adjust the ratio to your liking, but I like mine with 1 cup of each. I think the traditional method uses 2:1:1 ratio of onions:celery:carrots, but honestly it’s up to you! I parcel mine out 1:1:1 & freeze in Ziplocks that I reuse again and again for the same purpose.
