Old Fashioned Apple Crisp

It may be obvious at this point, but I love apple recipes. There’s something just so quintessentially autumn about apples! This recipe is takes that beloved apple flavor to the next level with a perfect balance of tart, sweet, crisp, and juicy goodness. Try it out for yourself! Vanilla ice cream is a great pair for this recipe, but I personally prefer it with my Homemade Whipped Cream.

This tart & sweet apple crisp is the pinnacle of autumn flavors! Add some vanilla ice cream or homemade whipped cream to make it an extra special treat.

Ingredients

  • 5-6 large Apples (I love Honeycrisp apples, but Granny Smiths are a delicious and popular choice)
  • 2 tsp pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon, divided
  • 1 tbsp white sugar
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold butter, diced very small
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Wash, peel, and chop apples, sprinkling with lemon juice as you go to prevent browning. You can skip the peeling, but I personally prefer the apples without the peel.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 and grease a 9" pie pan
  3. In a medium sized mixing bowl, stir the apples, lemon juice, white sugar, and 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice together.
  4. In a food processor or high powered blender, combine the brown sugar, flour, oats, butter, salt, and remaining pumpkin pie spice. Pulse until the butter is cut in and the dry ingredients are combined.
  5. Pour apples into the prepared baking dish and spread out the topping on top, pressing down a bit to make sure it's evenly distributed.
  6. Bake at 350 for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbling!
  7. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving with fresh homemade whipped cream!

Notes:

Serve warm with a dollop of homemade whipped cream!

Keep leftovers covered in the fridge for up to 3 days. The longer it stays in the fridge, the soggier it gets!
